Student-Produced Event Supporting the Fight Against Cancer

Rochester, N.Y. (April 9, 2011)- On Friday, April 8, students from the Aquinas Institute on Dewey Avenue used their vocal talents to raise money for the American Cancer Society. The performance entitled “Songs for a Cure” was directed, produced, and choreographed by senior Jillian Nalivyko.

The 10-person cast told the story of two people fighting their cancer battle through popular Broadway hits. The show featured songs from musicals such as “American Idiot”, “Songs for a New World”, and “RENT”.

After months of rehearsals, the cast took the stage in the Thomas F. Bell ’57 Auditorium in front of their peers, families, and teachers. Guests purchased concessions in the lobby and bought raffle tickets for items donated by local small businesses. The raffle items included gift certificates for prom attire, tickets to Darien Lake, and passes for an all-day moon bounce experience.

“It was a rewarding experience and I’m really grateful for everyone who had a part in making this night a success,” Nalivyko said. “It’s amazing to see so many people come together to help fight an illness that has impacted many of our lives.”

Proceeds from ticket, concession, and raffle sales were presented to a representative from the cancer non-profit at the end of the show. Altogether the students raised over $1,000 to help fund research programs and to give patients receiving treatment a place to stay while in Rochester.

The Aquinas Institute is located in Rochester, N.Y. It’s a place where middle and high schoolers can prepare themselves for the next step in their education.
